What Spring Looks Like

Spring moved in slooooowly this year. I suppose we should be thankful given how hot and dry it was all last summer. I think we had skipped Spring. This year seems to have brought a good balance of sunshine and rain. Warm days and cool.
We’ve been moving slowly too, when we can. I hate being busy. I love a wide margin and time for spontaneous gatherings with friends, or whole days at home with nowhere to go. I also hate being on a screen so much. Timothy and I decided to do a “screen free entertainment” week. We both tucked our apps away, and no computers were used for streaming or tv’s for watching movies. Completely screen free. We needed it. Aubrey needed it, and not because she has too much screen time, but because she sees the rest of us having too much screen time. How lonely she must always feel!
We did lots of reading, playing games, spent time outside, playing, going for walks, etc. it was glorious. If I’m completely honest, it brought relief to not be plugged in to everything going on everywhere. It’s so easy to get sucked into the habit of documenting every minute of a persons day. I stopped doing that awhile ago, not posting on social media everyday, sometimes for weeks at a time. But I was sure on there, scrolling through every minute of other people’s days.
Timothy and I have an appointment this morning to discuss what screen time looks like for us going forward. At 20 years old, I can’t tell him what he will and won’t do. But I can still have meaningful conversation and influence.
I’m writing this blog post now as the house still sleeps. I’ve decided that I will not be on a screen during the majority of the day. Early morning and evening when everyone is either sleeping or enjoying their own activities before bed.
Time is so precious and fleeting. I will never regret spending time living life and being engaged with others face to face. But I already regret how much time I’ve given devices.
So Spring will continue to look like enjoying life without being attached to a screen. We will continue to read, go on walks, play outside, play games and build puzzles. Oh, and spend lots of time with horses.
