A wanted man fleeing from pursuing officers ran into downtown traffic Friday evening and was hit by an approaching police car, according to Anchorage police.
Police say they had converged on Anchorage resident German Castillo, 20, at the Inlet Inn at about 4:30 p.m. to arrest him for assault and underage drinking warrants when he took off running.
Three or four officers pursued on foot, with one slipping during the pursuit and slightly injuring his knee, Lt. Dave Parker said.
Castillo ran into Seventh Avenue near the Anchorage Marriott Downtown hotel, swerving behind a stopped police car in one lane but in front of a still-moving squad car in the next, said Parker, who likened the flight to a football halfback's performance.
"He was going every which way," he said.
The squad car hit Castillo and "banged up" his legs, but he did not appear to have any broken bones, Parker said. Castillo was taken to a hospital to be examined before being booked into jail on the warrants.
He will likely be facing a charge of resisting arrest as well, Parker said.
Police shut down Seventh between H and I streets for a brief time as they worked the scene.
